Re: 1950's rockers still in shape/Edjamacatin' the young bucks
>>Hey,
a comment on this discussion about 50's rockers still delivering the
goods:
Ronnie Dawson is obvious. On the primitive side: Jack Earls is pretty
awesome
too. I've discussed this topic with my pals in The Barnshakers (a GREAT
finnish
rockabilly-honky tonk band, who've backed several 50's singers) who are
really
hardcore
1940-50's purists and they said that SId King was closest to his original
sound
( is that what was meant
by good?) of all the legends they've played with.
Backing band is always very crucial factor: a bad bar band
can ruin any act. Also if the performer doesn't have any repertoire of their
own
besides one or two numbers
(a and b-side of that one legendary 45) that basically means really boring
oldies set list.
Cats like Dale Hawkins are cool in this respect because he's got an
catalogue of
several classics of his own.
But in these cases it's up to the promoter or the backing band leader to
make
sure THOSE are the ones that
end up on the set list ( and not the blue suede shoes)
I guess it's the same with 60's reunions and the ever present curse of
"Mustang
Sally ".

Saw Sleepy La Beef around 93/94, pretty damn packed house, lotta old timers
& scene kids. Pretty damn amazing. I'd never heard (nor heard of) him til
that night. He played again roughly a year later & there wasn't more that
15 people there. Really kinda sad, "the scene" was over, hence few came
out. He was pretty damn energetic considering the size of the crowd. Plus,
he did a cover of an Etta James song, which was really cool.
Saw Andre Williams 2 years ago. (Search the archive "My dinner with Andre"
or some such tripe, for the complete misadventure). That man was the MOST
AMAZING muthafuckah I have ever had the pleasure to see, hear & eat
breakfast with. He strolled into the club 10 minutes before showtime,
waltzed up to the bar, asked for a bottle of Bacardi, got on stage & did his
thing. By the end of the set, he was on fire, half his clothes were off, the
bottle was empty & the crowd was INSANE. And then, he decided to finish
shooting my game for me, before he went to breakfast with us. He just put
out a new record, so if he tours, GO, baby, GO!!! You won't regret it.
More inane musing later,
Miss Dagmar O' Doom
