About the Cryan' Shames (this goes a while back):
I picked up their third LP ("Synthesis", Columbia 1969) last week, and
although I've only been able to play it once since, I thought it was great
laid-back psych-pop and found myself delighted as if on dope (I guess).

SO THEN I SAID:
Hardcore garage guys who only know "Sugar & Spice" b/w "Ben Franklin's
Almanac" usually back up when dealing with the Cryan Shames' entire output,
which leans towards the pop side. But, hey, on their own terms, they can
hang. Give 'em time, they'll grow on ya. The SUGAR & SPICE album is raggedy
folk-punk and still a gas to hear; A SCRATCH IN THE SKY leans more towards
Psych Lite, not as consistent but still worthwhile. Along those same lines:
PROGRESSIONS by the Five Americans, where this durable Texas pop-punk band
makes a polite attempt at psychedelia, circa 1967. I once played this right
after H.P.Lovecraft's first album, and for a few seconds I didn't know the
difference...
