Radio Rumpus Room playlist, 4/23/99
IT WAS THE FIRST time around the Rumpus Room for a bunch of really fine
discs: The Church Keys' "Work With It" on Norton (if you like the A-bones
you'll like this) and the rarest of all things -- an original recording on
the Sundazed label -- the Neanderthals "A Modern Stone-Age Family"
featuring guitar whizbang Eddie Angel. Ex-Fuzztones head cheese Link
Protudi was there with "Hit & Run!", a Get Hip compilation of two
previously ished LPs: "Drive It Home" and "Missing Links." The evening's
requisite twang was provided by June Carter Cash's new one, "Press On"
(Risk/Small Hairy Dog), the second volume of Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant
wonders by Razor & Tie, and Alejandro Escovedo's really fine "Bourbonitis
Blues," on Bloodshot. Oh yeah -- and the goofy Nutley Brass take on the
"Ramones Songbook." Along the way we paid our respects to Moby Grape
guitarist Skip Spence, who died a week earlier...
As always, many thanks to the artists and labels responsible for producing
tonight's music, and to the loyal listeners who inexplicably encourage us
to air it every week!
(If you're in the neighborhood, Radio Rumpus Room broadcasts Fridays at
9-10:30 p.m. on KFAI Fresh Air Radio, FM 90.3 Minneapolis and 106.7 St.

Here's the Radio Rumpus Room playlist for Friday, April 23, 1999:
SAVVY SHOW STARTER (ALWAYS LOCALLY RECORDED!)
Safety Last -- Zimbabwe Bop (self-titled EP; Twin/Tone, 1981)
Like Danny Amis' surf band the Overtones, rockabilly band Safety Last plied
its trade at an incongruous time in these Twin Cities -- the Longhorn Bar
punk era, circa 1978. One self-titled EP and the '83 LP "Struck By Love"
used to be all there was to remind us of what this fine band -- who often
opened for Husker Du at 7th Street Entry gigs -- sounded like. But since
the original threesome has been gigging again frequently for months now,
more recently located locals have a first-hand opportunity to see what the
fuss was all about. (For good or bad, no lucrative Gap promotions appear
likely.)
King Curtis Combo -- Arthur Murray Twist (Twistin' Time, Vol.2;
Knight/Hillsdale)
Neanderthals -- Shaggy Dog (A Modern Stone-Age Family; Sundazed)
US Four -- Alligator (Jump, Jive & Harmonize; Teenage Shutdown/Crypt)
Church Keys -- Church Keys Stomp (Work With It!; Norton)
Them -- Don't Look Now (Ho-Dad Hootenanny; Ho-Dad)
Mouse And The Traps -- Beg, Borrow And Steal (Public Execution; Eva boot)
Litter -- Whatcha Gonna Do About It (Distortions; Arf! Arf! reissue)
Headstones -- 24 Hours Everyday (24 Hours Everyday; Collectables)
Remains -- I'm A Man (A Session With...; Sundazed)
FOR ALEXANDER "SKIP" SPENCE...
Jefferson Airplane -- Blues From An Airplane (Jefferson Airplane Takes Off;
RCA)
Moby Grape -- Omaha (self-titled; Columbia)
Skip Spence -- Cripple Creek (Oar; Sony reissue of CBS LP)
Bottle Rockets -- Skip's Song (Leftovers; Doolittle)
June Carter Cash -- I Used To Be Somebody (Press On; Risk/Small Hairy Dog)
Freakwater -- Great Potential (Dancing Under Water; Thrill Jockey)
Johnny Cash -- Understand Your Man (16 Greatest Hits; Columbia Legacy)
Alejandro Escovedo -- California Blue (Bourbonitis Blues; Bloodshot)
Link Protrudi & The Jaymen -- Psyclone (Hit & Run!; Get Hip)
Speedy West & Jimmy Bryant -- Hillcrest (Opus 3) (Swingin' On The Strings;
Razor & Tie)
Los Straitjackets -- Surf Rider (Delphonic Sounds Today!; Del-Fi)
Nutley Brass -- Beat On The Brat (Ramones Songbook; Medicine)
Satans Pilgrims -- Green Peppers (Surfin' Senorita; Wildebeest)
And that's it!
